Green Bay's Best Pizza Places

I don’t know about you, but Andy and I love pizza! We are lucky to have a number of really great pizza places with a variety of styles of pizza in Green Bay. I will always love pizza almost any time of the day (although I can’t stand cold pizza for breakfast, can we still be friends?), and enjoy a delicious meal with thoughtful ingredients. This list includes my top seven favorite local pizza places in Green Bay—excluding chain pizza restaurants. In no particular order, beyond alphabetical, if you are in the mood for pizza, try these great pizzas:

Cranky Pat’s Pizza

With two other locations in the Fox Cities, I still consider Cranky Pat’s a local Green Bay pizza place. Around since 1955, I grew up on Cranky Pat’s pizza back when it was called Frank and Pat’s Pizza. After Frank passed away, the name became Cranky Pat’s, and the pizza is still great. Known for their crispy, thin crust pizzas, the crust gets a number of crunchy air bubbles, and is a perfect base to hold great toppings. Offered on weekends, their late night pizza buffet is a Green Bay staple and their pizza buffet on Mondays is perfect for the whole family. You can build your own pizza or order one of their specialty pizzas—or just order pizza to go and pick it up in their fun rotating pizza oven!

Gallagher’s Pizza

Their claim to fame tagline is: “The best Chicago style pizza north of the Illinois boarder, Gallagher’s Pizza is your destination.” Also with a couple locations in the Green Bay area, their thinner crust pizza is fantastic, but they also do hand tossed and their Chicago style deep dish pan pizza. Besides their flavorful pizzas with juicy sauce, great cheese, and a wide range of toppings, their calzones, pastas, and sandwiches are delicious options on their menu. Gallagher’s is another Green Bay pizza staple that’s been around for a long time.

Glass Nickel Pizza

The closest to a chain on the list, Glass Nickel Pizza restaurants are solely located in Wisconsin, which is why I love them. Making great pizzas since 1997, they opened their first pizza place in Madison, Wisconsin, and their delicious pizzas have made it all over the state. From hand tossed, hand tossed thin, cracker thin, and thick, their crusts are phenomenal. I am sensitive to gluten, so anytime I can find a gluten free crust, I will absolutely go with that option, and their gluten free pizza is really tasty! Their crust always has good flavor and their sauce is a great compliment. I miss the days when my downtown house was right by their Green Bay location—practically too close to order delivery! Check out their bar top while you enjoy pizza and a beer.

Hinterland

My old place of work! Hinterland’s pizzas are phenomenal, especially their flavorful wood fired pizza, which is one of their staple items brought over from their original downtown store to the new restaurant in the Titletown District. The pizza is delicious and not your every day, run of the mill pizza. With awesome ingredients, you cannot go wrong with their four classic pizzas on the menu. Mainly known for other go-to items and a fantastic beer list, Hinterland also does pizzas really well. The first one I ever had was their Quattro Formaggi cheesy masterpiece: belgioioso mozzarella, goat cheese, smoked bleu cheese, parmesan, all topped with rosemary honey to complete a salty-sweet delectable combination that is to die for and totally addicting! To find thoughtful toppings and not a run of the mill pizza, Hinterland is the place to go.

Jake’s Pizza

Jake’s was originally on the East side of town for forty years and another Green Bay classic pizza place. I grew up on this pizza and Cranky Pat’s pizza; and that’s all I knew as far as pizza went! Two sisters bought Jake’s pizza and moved the restaurant to the West side of town, just over the river. Their downtown location is pretty cool, and even though different people own it, the pizza tastes almost exactly the same—it would take a pro to tell if there is any difference between them. Their thin crust is from dough made from scratch topped with homemade sauce and fresh ingredients. Their specialty pizzas are delicious, and they offer a build your own option as well.

Rustique

One of the reasons Rustique is so great is because it is right down the road from my studio. I indulge in their pizza more than I used to, which is not a bad thing! Their thin, New York style crust cooked in a brick oven is really awesome. The space is cool and you can never go wrong with their fresh toppings. Rustique’s menu also offers sandwiches and delicious pesto fries; but their pizzas are out of the ordinary—definitely not like a run of the mill chain pizza place. Visit the restaurant to try a margarita pizza that is out of this world, or stop by their food truck every Wednesday at the downtown farmers market to enjoy a pizza with sautéed shrimp, roasted asparagus, and beurre blanc. Not only does their food truck offer the perfect food after walking around, Rustique’s restaurant doubles as a fantastic venue for private events.

Sgambati’s New York Pizza

Serving up a steaming and delicious New York style pizza with fresh dough, fresh sauces, and a casual, cozy spot, I loved getting pizza from Sgambati’s when I lived in De Pere. The combination of sauces, crispy crust, and ingredients provides a spread of interesting and pleasing flavors, such as their chicken carbonara and their mac ‘n cheese pizza. Order a whole pizza, or try a new specialty pizza, classic cheese pizza, or stuffed pizza by the slice.

Our seven favorite pizza places in Green Bay—each one is a little bit different to cater to whatever you are looking for—but they are all delicious. I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely adding pizza to my must-eat list for this week.

Keep exploring, my friends!
