Whether we’re exploring new places, or returning to a place we love, travel gets us out of our element and into the unknown. It’s a place of mystery, excitement, and wonder, but it can also be overwhelming and confusing. Here are a few general travel tips for your next adventure, and all the adventures after that:
Before you leave for your adventure, make sure you’re well rested, hydrated, and nourished. A great night’s sleep can cure a number of ailments and leave you feeling refreshed and ready to rock the moment your feet hit the pavement. Staying hydrated and eating smart can help curb jetlag and awaken your senses when you reach your destination.
Pack smart, choosing clothing items that you can reuse and pair with the other items you bring. If you plan on doing a lot of hiking, bring at least three pairs of socks and liner socks: one pair to wear while you hike, one pair to wear while you’re washing/drying that first pair, and another fresh pair to put on at the end of the day.
Keep a backup of paper maps at your disposal whether you’re heading off on a road trip, or jet setting somewhere far away. Technology isn’t always reliable, and a paper map can save your bottom when you’re in the middle of nowhere, your GPS signal is lost, and you need to know which highway to turn on (ask me about my northern Arizona travel snafu).
Connect with the locals as often as possible. Some of the best relationships I’ve fostered while traveling have been with the local restaurant and coffee shop owners, and they have been so incredibly kind to us every time we return. At the least, making friends with your hotel concierge can usually point you in the direction of a really great local restaurant (provided they don’t have a monetary relationship set up with some less-than-stellar restaurant chain in town)
